The Oratory FAQ is fun for both boys and girls. Let's all read now, as Oratory co-administrator John C. separates the facts from the fiction with his exhaustive answers to frequently asked questions. If you have a question that you'd like to see on the Oratory FAQ, send it to John at oratoryjohn@gmail.com.
Why should I read the Oratory?
Because we provide wrestling fans with the absolute best wrestling columns that you'll find anywhere on the internet. There is no other site on the internet that covers the entire world of wrestling the way we do.
What makes The Oratory different from other wrestling sites?
We concentrate simply on wrestling columns. We don’t cover the news by copying and pasting from some other site, we write columns only. The word “column” covers everything from articles on individual wrestlers, specific storylines, previewing a major event, reviewing a major event or anything else that involves the business of professional wrestling. If it involves this business, we will cover it. You can count on that.
Whether it's the biggest promotion in the world like WWE, the national TNA promotion, the overseas wrestling environment or indy promotions like ROH, we cover it all. On top of all that, we have several writers covering UFC, K-1, PRIDE and their competitors. If it's wrestling or mixed martial arts related, you can bet that we cover it.
When did the site begin?
The Oratory first became a regular wrestling opinion site on February 8, 1999. It was originally a sub-site of a major wrestling newsboard at the time called “The Big 3 Wrestling Newsboard.” The site was titled as such because at the time, there were three major wrestling companies in North America (WWF, WCW and ECW). The original Oratory founder was named David Tyler. He hired the original staff.
Who came up with the name Oratory?
David Tyler, the man who first created it. The word Oratory means, according to dictionary.com, “eloquence or skill in making speeches to the public.” An Orator would be the person making those speeches, which would classify the writers here as Orators.
What does Dave Tyler do for the Oratory now?
He’s no longer affiliated with the site.
Who runs the site now and in the past?
From its inception David was at the helm, but his participation was slowly becoming more and more sporadic. Several of the writers on staff took notice of this trend and offered to lighten his load, so to speak, as interim administrators of the site. Matt Spence, a former Oratory writer, and I stepped up to the challenge. From about April ’99 to October ’99, we were single-handedly in charge of the site.
Towards the end of the year, another Oratory writer named drqshadow stepped in for Matt Spence as co-administrator. Matt was too busy with his own life and couldn’t make a commitment to his role anymore. Since that time, drqshadow has continued his role as administrator. I have as well, although I temporarily left the role for about four months in 2001 due to personal reasons. We added Dave “Spinner” Spinosa as the third admin in 2001, and the three of us continue to run the site today.
Who has written for the Oratory since it began, and where can I read their stuff?
A great number of writers have contributed to the Oratory over the years, and a lot of namees have come and gone. The number of different authors that have been a part of the Oratory is somewhere in the range of sixty writers. It would be far too difficult to get an exact number.
Do the writers at the Oratory make money?
No, there is no money involved. We do this because we are wrestling fans that want to share our intelligent opinions with others.
Why should I sign up for the forums?
The Oratory forums, located here, are a place where the Oratory’s readers go to talk about everything from wrestling to music to movies to sports to politics to television and anything else their heart desires. It’s also a place where readers can interact with the writers by offering them feedback in the special “Column Feedback” section of the forums.
Do any Oratory writers have backstage connections in the wrestling world, and can they get me the email addresses of my favorite wrestlers?
It depends on the writer. Some people have connections while others don’t. Most writers do not. Like we said earlier, we are just fans who follow the business from our homes.
How would one get hired to write for The Oratory?
The best bet is to try your hand at writing in the Reader’s Columnist Corner (RCC), located exclusively in the Oratory forums. The RCC is a place where you can write a column and have it read by a large community of wrestling fans. Once a person has impressed the administrators enough with their work in the RCC, they could be called up to the Oratory main page. Presently, ten current Oratory writers sharpened their skills in the RCC before they were hired, which is proof that success coming from the RCC is very likely.
If I'm having trouble with the website, forums etc; who do I contact for help?
You can contact the following people with your questions:
John C. - oratoryjohn@gmail.com
drqshadow - drqshadow@gmail.com
Dave Spinosa - spinner@deepspace9mm.net
Your best bet if you have a technical question is to contact Phoebus Apollo, the man who scripted the current Oratory main page - phoebus@PAOracle.com
Are there archives for Oratory writers, both past and present?
Yes. You can access the column archives in two different ways. At the top of the page, you can click on the Archives button to browse columns sorted by date and focus. The other option is to click on Staff to read about each writer, where you’ll be able to read EVERY column that the writer has written during their time as part of the Oratory.
How often is the main page updated?
Daily. 24/7/365. Columns, previews and reviews are always being updated on the main page. Keep checking the main page to read all the new columns as they are posted.
Why are there two different groups of writers that recap the WWE wrestling shows?
When the new Oratory began here as a part of Rajah.com, we decided to split up the staff just like the WWE splits up their roster. Just like you’ll see Chris Benoit only on Raw and Eddie Guerrero only on Smackdown, you’ll see the same people reviewing the specific WWE shows. No writer recaps both shows. They are an exclusivity to their respective review team.
What are some of the acronyms that I read about at the Oratory?
(RRC) Raw Review Crew – The team that reviews Raw every week.
(OTC) Oratory Television Council – The team that reviews Smackdown every week.
(RCC) Reader’s Columnist Corner – The place where anybody can write a column with the hopes that one day they’ll be noticed and hired by the Oratory staff.
(O2) Oratory Opinions – The Oratory’s sister site that covers opinion columns that don’t deal with wrestling. You can visit Oratory Opinions by clicking here.
(OW) Oratory Wrestling – That’s what you’re reading right now. Just another name for the wrestling main page.
That’s all we have for now. Just a reminder that if you have any more questions that you'd like to see answered, please don’t hesitate to contact me at oratoryjohn@gmail.com with your queries.
